Vinca's Masters Agility Career

Just as with her mother Bossa, we started Vinca's agility log as soon as she entered Excellent because we have found these logs to be a useful training aid. (Click for Bossa's log.) Vinca went through a rough patch where she didn't want to do agility, but being patient and easing her back into training and trials resulted in a happy competitor once again.

This is a record of all of Vinca's runs in AKC Masters Preferred agility.

Vinca has 50 championship points and 1 double Qs.
A dog requires 750 championship points and 20 double Qs to receive the PACH title.

45.02 (SCT 62) Slow at points early on the course but she ran a good line. Fourth run of the day. 2/10 for MJP
1st place 16 points
Torka Poet
47.74 (SCT 71) Best of her runs for the day, a little attention loss mid-weaves but she didn't pop out. 1/10 for MXP
2nd place 23 points
Jim Primmer
A very distracted Premier JWW run to start the day didn't instill confidence. Glad to see her come back in Masters.

This was just a partial day at Fun Fur Paws to see how Vinca would behave at a different venue. This location was a problem before. We only ran in Premier Jumpers / Standard, but we will be back! P2 in Premier Jumpers and only missed a Q in Standard because I mishandled the weave exit.

44.30 (SCT 56) Sixth run of the weekend and a solid, clean run. As she gets more comfortable she is starting to pick up speed.

51.26 (SCT 74) A little slow (careful?) in the weaves, but otherwise a really great run.

Today she started with second place in Premier Standard. Six out of six Qs for the weekend.

41.87 (SCT 55) Very solid, confident run. Good weaves. Almost missed a tunnel looking at a jump setter but saved it.

57.07 (SCT 73) Good confident run, wide where the dog walk was an off course option.

Started her day with a great Q in Premier Jumpers. First time she has qualified three times in a day!

Vinca went through a period where she didn't want to do agility, lacking confidence and not having fun. We took some time off, slowly eased back in to classes, and then back to trialing. It took a while before she was happy, but the new log (above) reflects the restart of her career in preferred.

58.54 (SCT 50) A good start but something along the back barrier spooked her and she froze in the weaves. Tried a second time but she was still spooked. Finished up ok.
Dave Sliger
83.18 (SCT 73) Looked great early but something on the back wall spooked her repeatedly. Fell off the dog walk ascent, and basically looked worried. But, did her weaves!
Jill Crawford
Felt like she was doing well going into the ring, but she is clearly not comfortable.

N/T (SCT 54) Vinca seemed focused outside the ring but not so inside... she gave up at pole 10 in the weaves (stepping out) and I picked her up. Did the earlier standard run have her stressed?
Dale Mahoney
62.89 (SCT 75) A nice standard run, not as fast as in class but still a good performance. Pulled off the weave entrance (handling?) and then popped pole 11 when I praised her a split second too fast.
Jan Skurzynski
Going to work on my ring entrance routine with Vinca, and figure out how to take the pressure off the weaves.

46.54 (SCT 47) A pretty nice second run, although wide at a number of points, good weaves, but I think I overhandled the last tunnel entrance and she ran around the tunnel.

66.57 (SCT 75) Once again popped out of the weaves at pole 8, this time weaving off side. Did ok the second time and finished well. A little high on the a-frame dismount.

I'm wondering if I have started to crowd her in the weaves, now that I'm worried about them. I would also like to see better focus.

N/T (SCT 76) Again in the standard ring pulling out of the weaves to the left at pole 6, this time towards the secretary table. Tried again, did it again, and picked her up.
Lisa Potts
I feel like the weave issue in standard had more to do with the center aisle than anything, but still not happy with it.

35.51 (SCT 43) A little cautious jumping (Diane thinks she didn't trust the surface). A great run but some rough handling one jump from the finish caused a bar to drop.
Ronda Bermke

63.26 (SCT 73) Something got her attention hard at pole 6 of the weaves. Retried successfully and then ran the rest nicely. A good first appearance in excellent.
Christian Echhoff

All in all a nice pair of runs. Not sure what caused the issue in standard, even watching the tape.

47.49 (SCT 47) Vinca seemed a little skittish in her first trial appearance in a while. Spooked by the dog on the dog walk in the other ring as she entered the weaves. Ran out a serp jump.
Christian Echhoff
60.49 (SCT 72) She had a little more time between runs and came back strong in standard. Great contacts, solid weaves. 3/3 for OA

Nice to see Vinca running like she does in class in standard. Open Standard Title!

54.70 (SCT 49) A good looking run although looking over her shoulder a bit. In the closing sequence the next handler slammed the gate, and she bolted picking up an R and a lot of wasted time.
Ronda Bermke
60.49 (SCT 72) Once again, popped the last weave pole heading towards the secretary table. Good on second pass. Otherwise solid, until she dropped the last bar while looking over her shoulder.
Debby Wheeler
So much for the confidence - not sure it this was burn out from three hard days or me not using the stroller ring side, but she seemed more nervous than usual.

40.03 (SCT 50) Dropped two bars - the first I was racing her, not sure why the second fell. Good concentration, didn't let herself be distracted.
Ronda Bermke
60.77 (SCT 75) Popped the last weave pole, apparently distracted by activity at the secretary table. Would have been a Q but she also dropped a bar after the table.
Debby Wheeler
A good pair of runs, paying good attention to me and not showing signs of being as distracted (aside from the weaves). Continuing to show confidence.

48.60 (SCT 51) Vinca was fired up for the first run of the day, broke her start line stay, and I was well behind her at the weave entrance, pushing her wide. She did them on the second try, but knocked a late bar. A good run but we still need to work on her focus.
Traci Mazur
48.48 (SCT 80) Once again a short time between runs, but did a better job keeping her calm and refreshed for her second Open Standard Q. Not a lot to complain about, a little high on the A-frame dismount but still in the yellow. 2/3 for OA

Vinca gets really excited about being at trials - we need to teach her that it is ok to wait patiently. As it is, she is too crazed to focus for the first run.

61.30 (SCT 50) We were late to the trial and badly managed Vinca's body temps during warmup. She was melting from the heat and slow. Ran out the second tunnel.
Ken Boyd (Oksana Syrkin design)
61.09 (SCT 76) Better temperature management and she was fast and eager on the second run. Great contacts and weaves. One runout towards her leash as we looped back to the start, and another runout at the second tunnel.
Ken Boyd
Not so worried about jumpers - that was bad heat management on our part. Running out the tunnels (yellow tunnels, rear crossing entrance both times) is more concerning.

47.12 (SCT 54) Vinca's first run outdoors, a little put off by the visuals (ring fencing, which she can see through rather than solid walls at horse barns) but she ran well. Way too fast into the weaves and couldn't make pole four. It was HOT.
Ken Boyd
69.11 (SCT 76) Didn't complete the weaves (tried twice), very distracted by the setups on that side of the ring. First time running outdoors, so not surprising. Did I mention it was HOT?
Ken Boyd (Oksana Syrkin design)
Another new experience, this time the first time outdoors. Vinca handled the heat just fine, better than her handler!

48.24 (SCT 52) A bit distracted on her first run, particularly interested in bar setters. Dropped a late bar looking over her shoulder at a bar setter. Seemed tired at the end, wasting too much energy getting wound up?
Jenny Burrows
60.77 (SCT 70) Second run of the day. Had to call Vinca off a tempting A-frame trap at the start, she came to me but ran out the weave entrance in the process. 1/3 for OA.

Vinca's first time at this site, definitely distracted by the environment and particularly the barking from dogs crated indoors.

74.19 (SCT 73) Vinca was too fired up at the start making some speed faults, and fatigued by the end, dropping a couple bars. W, R, T, F, F. Popped the poles for the first time in competition. But even with that basket of faults it was a really good run.
Jenny Burrows
Vinca's open standard run was less than ten minutes after her jumpers Q. She was still fired up but seemed tired by the end.

A pretty hot day, and a long wait for the novice standard run, but well done.
